EKAL Urbana Kids tree planting

In a project coordinated by the VOU, Green Team Urbana and the Future Stars Program, we joined other volunteers on Sunday May 15 to beautify our neighborhood. Inspired by the success of last year’s plantings in the VOU, Abhi Senthilkumar, a senior at Urbana High School, organized Team Rushmore to add more native plants to our environment.

We spent the late Sunday afternoon hours planting on Addison Woods Road, which is a popular walkway for the community residents, with three schools close by. We planted close to 800 small native plants along the street’s sidewalk. Not only do native plants improve the community’s aesthetic beauty, but they save money, time and resources.

Here are the names of the plants we planted wild Bergamot, New York asters, beardtongue, foamflower, and golden ragwort.

You can check out the wildlife value for each by going to DNR Maryland.

We really enjoyed this learning experience and can’t wait for the plants to grow. Until they establish, the area will need to be weeded and invasive plants removed. If you would like to help in this effort.
